After each challenge or mission, the scientists feed the colony seeds and live creatures. The colony must establish itself in the formicarium and survive a multitude of challenges that the two scientists create. The primary mode of the game is the story mode where the player takes the ownership of a gene-thief colony observed by two scientists.
